Background of the Study
Alumni management is an essential component of higher education institutions, as it fosters lifelong relationships between graduates and their alma mater. An effective alumni management system facilitates networking, career development, mentorship, fundraising, and institutional reputation enhancement. However, many tertiary institutions, particularly in Nigeria, lack a structured and efficient system for managing alumni relations, leading to weak engagement, communication gaps, and lost opportunities for institutional growth (Adeyemi & Musa, 2023).
The Federal College of Education (FCE), Zaria, has produced thousands of graduates who have excelled in various educational and professional fields. Despite this, there is no centralized, technology-driven platform to maintain contact with alumni, track their career progress, or involve them in the college’s development initiatives. The absence of a well-structured alumni management system limits opportunities for networking, job placements, research collaborations, and financial contributions to the institution (Okonkwo & Ibrahim, 2024). Many alumni lose touch with the institution due to a lack of engagement mechanisms, while the college struggles to leverage its alumni base for mentorship programs, donations, and industry linkages.
In recent years, digital alumni management systems have gained prominence in universities and colleges worldwide. These platforms use web-based and mobile technologies to facilitate communication, data management, and event coordination between alumni and their alma mater. Universities such as Harvard and Oxford have implemented advanced alumni networks that provide career support, fundraising mechanisms, and real-time interaction between past and current students (Olawale & Yusuf, 2023). However, most Nigerian tertiary institutions, including FCE Zaria, still rely on traditional methods such as manual records, email lists, and social media groups, which are inefficient and fragmented (Ahmed & Hassan, 2024).
Without an efficient alumni management system, FCE Zaria faces challenges in tracking graduates, mobilizing alumni for institutional development, and fostering meaningful professional connections. A digital alumni platform could bridge this gap by providing a centralized database for alumni records, networking opportunities, event management, and fundraising initiatives. Therefore, this study aims to design an alumni management system tailored to the needs of Federal College of Education, Zaria, to enhance alumni engagement, institutional development, and career support for both graduates and current students.
Statement of the Problem
The lack of an effective alumni management system at Federal College of Education, Zaria, has resulted in poor alumni engagement, loss of valuable connections, and missed opportunities for institutional growth. Many graduates lose contact with the institution after graduation due to the absence of a structured platform for communication and networking (Adebayo & Musa, 2023). Additionally, the college is unable to track alumni progress, making it difficult to leverage their expertise, financial contributions, or mentorship for current students.
Existing alumni engagement methods, such as social media groups and email lists, are insufficient for maintaining long-term, structured relationships between the college and its graduates. These methods do not provide centralized data management, career support, or fundraising mechanisms (Okonkwo & Salisu, 2024). Moreover, the absence of a real-time alumni interaction platform limits opportunities for professional networking, knowledge sharing, and collaboration among graduates.
Furthermore, the college lacks a systematic approach to mobilizing alumni for institutional development projects, scholarship programs, and research collaborations. A well-designed alumni management system would enable FCE Zaria to maintain an up-to-date alumni database, facilitate career networking, and organize fundraising initiatives efficiently. This study, therefore, seeks to develop a technology-driven alumni management system that will enhance alumni engagement, institutional support, and career development opportunities for both current and former students.

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it introduces a technology-driven approach to alumni management at Federal College of Education, Zaria. By developing a centralized digital platform, the institution can strengthen its relationship with graduates, enhance networking opportunities, and improve institutional development efforts. The findings of this research will provide valuable insights for university administrators, policymakers, and software developers interested in optimizing alumni relations. Additionally, the study could serve as a model for other Nigerian tertiary institutions seeking to implement digital alumni management solutions.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study is limited to the design and implementation of an alumni management system for Federal College of Education, Zaria. It will focus on evaluating the usability, effectiveness, and impact of the system on alumni engagement and institutional support. Data collection will be restricted to alumni, current students, and administrative staff at FCE Zaria. The study will not extend to other institutions or general networking platforms.
